Editorial
It was 16th July, 2020. Around 10:00 a.m. my legs began to ache and by the evening the full body was under fever. The treatment began but no recovery was found till 23rd. Passed through the Corona test and I was found positive. And then began the journey of hospitals and medicines. Next day Tanvi – my wife too tested positive. Only the silver line in the dark cloud of my family was children and other family members. They were negative but, in such difficulties, it no made differences. Eight year and nine and a half year children never ever remained away from us. Since last three months they saw news and learnt that ‘Corona means the end’. End of the life. While I was taken away in an ambulance, I almost broke down seeing their faces. The ambulance ran through societies and roads with its typical siren. On both sides stood people watching it with doubts, sympathy, fear and suspense. These scenes still come before my eyes. The ambulance driver was in his routine work playing filmy songs loudly and enjoying them. The ambulance itself in a poor condition made horrible noise. The mind had innumerable things and emotions. For a while it blinked, “Would I return on the same road? Or would it be the last journey?” The rational arguments the mind made: The death rate only seven to eight percentage. The remaining ones return to normally. In time treatment, no danger. And so on.
My wife too was struggling in fever. First, I was admitted in a government hospital and then was shifted to another one. The same happened to her also. One more family member tested positive and then started endless troubles. Three hospitals – three people. At home five children and an old woman. The young were too locked in the fever. Three days were deadly. Even on the thought of food, vomiting began. Any food before me made vomiting. No taste at all. Cough and cold I had less. Sometimes I coughed only. Oxygen level never dropped down. The blood pressure was under control. Fever stopped. The only trouble of horrible pain in the legs. Such an ache I had never and it almost numbed my mind. Often felt to cut down legs and remove from my body. Unbearable pain, and no food resulted in weakness. To raise my hand, I had to make a huge effort – as if to lift a mountain. This led for multivitamin bottles. They gave me them. During these treatment days Dr. Parth Raval, Dr. Mayur Gohil and the nurse – Shwetaben helped me a lot. They constantly encouraged me. Many times, I felt death approaching and thought the final moments have come.
Fear I had not of my death but the condition of the family would be the worst. Such a horrible time very closely I saw but finally at the night of 28th July, I found a ray of hope. The body got new vigour and with it came out a hope. A hope to survive. A hope to coming back to life. I got up. Prayed the God silently. Took few rounds in the room. Remembered my loved ones and made up my mind. ‘Still many miles to go.’
All the drama was performed on the Gandhinagar stage. It was good that large family, big friends circle and known hospital I had, and that gave me a huge relief.
Then came the happy ending of my fifteen-day struggle. All’s ended well. Returned home. My returning to home was only because of great efforts of the doctors, nurses, family members, friends and the government administration. Weakness has not gone still but I have hope to reenergise myself.
You may feel why this personal note? But there’s the reason to begin with it. We all know Corona (Covid-19) has enveloped our life since the month of March. The facts and figures of its spread and deaths due to it show that it has almost brought the world under its feet. And I was also one of millions of victims. I didn’t know how it got me. Never I was without a mask, never I forgot sanitiser, never involved into crowds, never came across any Covid affected one, and yet Corona virus got me. Where did it come from? My direct experiences force me to say something. Something that I must tell you. Hence this story I told to you. And more I would like to share.
‘Fear’ is the greatest feeling of the present time. Such is the condition that one has to face fear. Not only the ‘Covid-19’ virus but calamities have arrived joining hands with it. Hardly any continent, any country, any land is left with its terror. Earthquakes, fire in forests, snow fall at many places, unseasonable rain – that sunk many areas of many countries – are such other troubles. In India the Eastern region, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai have been pounded with heavy rain. Lightening has struck and killed many at various places. Many during their treatment at hospitals have met death because of accidental fire. After unlock in Pakistan, many passengers going to home to celebrate Ed have been killed in a plane crash, at Karachi. Before it goes out of our memory another plane coming from Dubai to Kozhikode in India crashed while landing taking more than 21 lives. The aboard passengers were at Dubai because of the Corona situation. After a long wait they were coming to their home.
To save themselves from the Corona infection many unemployed workers began to migrate from cities to their native villages. This is the issue which requires a separate research and description. During this hard lockdown time many were pitiful scenes of workers returning to their villages on foot. This type of a problem hasn’t been seen anywhere else in other countries. The worker’s migration was shocking. Mumbai became epicentre of Corona and huge records. Many cases – one walked 700 kms and other a girl rode 400 kms on a bicycle taking her father – have come before us which show how frightening and terrible the condition was! Heartfelt situation of people who walked and died on the way may numb anyone’s heart. It is also a fact that humanity and cruelty both were revealed in such a time. Innumerable children and women lost their lives on way. Many were crushed under some goods train while resting on a track after a long walk. Many trucks and other vehicles overloaded with migrating people died in road accidents. Many vehicles fell into valleys and took away lives. The horrible scenes of such a life shook the mankind.
The central government without any prior announcement, and giving any chance to people to return homes, declared lockdown. From a point of view, it looked reasonable but as the time went on and situations began to worsen, one began to feel that the government should have taken some planned steps. In fact, the Corona infection speeded up after unlock. No doubt it’s not easy to deal with such an unexpected situation. Even pre-planning seems difficult but we need to learn from the past. This learning if a common man doesn’t comprehend may be granted but how can it be that the government has no plan at all?
Religious places respected humanity and fed thousands of people. This is one thing but on the other many fanatic and superstitious things have also helped spread Corona. Even many tried it intentionally. Nowhere but in our country, it happened that people pelted the doctors, nurses and police officials. This was the cruelty beyond any limit. The situation also made many men heroes. Out of common men superhuman beings were born. They not only fed but helped them to reach their homes. Body, mind, and soul, and financial aids, and total devotion of these heroes showed the true facets of humanity. The medical, police and the government employees, politicians and many others put everything into the service. They focused on ‘service to humanity is the service to God’. The pages of history have also noted such glorious actions.
On one side the Corona pandemic and on the other its aiding natural calamities. With them were bomb blasts! There’s a belief that the Corona virus has its genes in a Chinese laboratory. Many saw it a Chinese pattern to wreck the world. The world is aghast of the Beirut bomb blast. Still unknown – whether it’s an accident or a terror attack! The Middle East countries, the Chinese Sea, the China – Indo border conflict, the Turkey struggle, killing in Afghanistan, Iran’s atomic programme; the China - America tension, conflicts between China – Taiwan - Hong Kong; Israel and the Middle East country issues; dubious Russian political role, and the rise in arms trade are the huge issues troubling the world.
We are also facing the economic crisis because of the Covid problem. From February-March, 2020 trade and business has stopped. It also shut down the export-import of essential commodities. International air services two have been halted. Meetings, gatherings, political assemblies and all such activities have no life. It’s but natural that activities, celebration have come to an end. Each country in a larger perspective seems to be encaged. Life – common or in the larger scale is paralysed. Facing doubts, facing future. Untouchability has become a great moral duty. This is indeed a big blow to us. What’s the meaning of life when we lose touch and emotions and feelings?
This period will be a turning point to the generation below 10 years. The childhood is lost between the home walls. The world of touch is snatched away. Masks on the face limited a person’s identity. Open sky, play grounds flowing with energy, school play grounds with hilarious cries of children, class rooms with fun and frolic, street games and all such things have gone. Gone very far from them. These joyful days have gone. Repeatedly sanitising hands and the mask on the face create constant fear. A feeling of Corona infection spreads within before one touches to anything. A kind of hatred to an unknown person is born. These things show bitter reality. None is in a condition to see anyone healthy.
The hospitals have been flooded. The patients in the government and non-government hospitals, temporary aid centres, and quarantine centres are in huge figures. It’s a big problem – where to keep them for treatment. The big cities face this issue. Now the infection pattern is also changed. People who lived in cities rushed to their root villages taking Corona with them and spreading it in small villages. The trained staff for the Covid treatment is insufficient against the large number of patients. This created a fear amongst the healthy people. There’s constant doubt, and fear- fear of infection. The savings made by the people also have been spent, and so the struggle to survive emerged. The middle class and the upper middle class are struggling for getting work and re-compensate the loss in business. Pathetic condition is of those who were working in private sectors, or on contract basis. These employees, small traders and business people, daily wagers, small scale investors and entrepreneurs, teachers on low wages in big private schools with high fees have undergone a traumatic condition. This pandemic has made a deadly blow upon them. Even after many governments helps it’s not easy for them to rise and stand up again. Of course, it is also a fact that once the human kind tumbled from its high position, it has risen again with double vigour. Examples are many. After the destruction construction has come. This is unique. I have deep faith in the mankind. It will rise once again and, in a year, or two with a double speed bring back normally.
India has taken up its tally at the third position in the most infected country list. Only consolation is that its recovery rate has gone up 70%. After passing through hard lockdown times we are now in the unlock phase – 3 position. Most of the business places have opened up but it’s under the Covid terror. It means nothing is like before. Religious places have also been opened up. Marriages and social occasions have to follow strict rules. There’s ban on political, cultural programmes, and public events. Still schools and colleges, cinemas and theatres are closed and may not open in a month or two. A leading businessman of our country Ratan Tata’s statement has become very popular relevant to our present crisis. He says, ‘If we survive through 2020, it should be considered a great success.’
Indeed, it is a great success to survive. It’s not the time for development, business and employment, success and new initiatives. Right now, they are on hold. No new project is possible. It’s also a big adventure to go to outside at a tea stall at the cross roads. And if you are infected, then all’s over. I don’t mean death but not less than that. No remedy still on hand, whatever claims are made have no trust. Some medicines came in the markets but none can assure its success. Many research institutes have claimed vaccines for Covid but their efforts are passing through the last phases. So, it may take two or three months to get vaccine from markets. Whatever remedies are done, it is the traditional influenza and pneumonia remedy. After so much hot fluid taken by the people, it seems that the whole society has become a hot pot. Beyond limits have gone Ayurvedic, homeopathic and homely ways to keep oneself fit against Corona. People have turned industrious to take herbs and spices protecting themselves against cold and cough. No one knows, how does this Corona spread? What’s cure? No guarantee of any cure. Those who remained in houses have been infected and those who are on garbage, or living 24 hours among Corona patients, or the sanitary workers disposing the medical waste have no Corona effect at all. No calculation, no rational argument works. No method, no way correct. Doctors of 20-25 years and some Corona warriors have been defeated against the disease. Many names have shocked us when they have taken the latest treatment at very expensive hospitals. On the contrary people above 90 years infected and are feeble and at the verge of death have come out after normal treatment. Many passed a month, many on the ventilation for 15 days have returned homes heal and healthy! This is charisma of Almighty, surprising way of Corona. The way Corona takes birth, develops and spreads has remained a mystery. Even after many animation films, many articles, it has remained away from the doctors and the researcher’s comprehension.
The biggest achievement of the Corona times is that it has opened new ways of expressing sentiments through social media. They have shaped the man in terms of their expression. They provided a new platform. How much has come out in various languages all over the world! They have given a free way to the people encaged between home walls. Facebook, Tweeter, blogs, What’s App and videos have brought out a lot of content. Personal feelings, experiences around them, changed life have revealed new dimensions. The ways of making satire, adventurous attitude, black humour, frailty of politicians, social customs and religious ways have remained a hot content in different videos. Many new celebrities of social life were born. Figures of domestic violence between husband and wife and family members and novel ways of cruelty have shaken us. On unbelievable things news came. Various views took place and matchless are the opinions, human sentiments. Good and bad are innumerable things. Everything can’t be caught here.
As the man remained in the home, good things too happened. Life of birds and animals; pollution in cities; halted transportation revealed a brighter side. Thousands of photographs showing pollution almost none, clean and fresh air, animals freely moving on solitary roads gave happiness to millions of people. The social media over flooded with such content. The broken ozone layer was stitched. Pollution in big cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai came to very low level. Such news brightened plenty of faces. The experience of staying at home was a different one. The man who always strove day and night for his livelihood so suddenly was paralysed, and the consequences were quite amazing. He put his experiences in videos or in stories and poems. Some shared their experiences on various media. It also revived earlier pandemic situation. The past hidden in different pictures, images, photographs, articles, films and literature again rose before us.
Not a single field remained untouched by this pandemic. It has shown its sign in the beginning of 2020. Some wise countries and societies had in advance started taking precautions. Japan learning from the experiences aftermath of the World War II made wearing a mask their part of life. Protecting against radiation and epidemic diseases, mask and social distancing were their natural practice they could save themselves even though they are a neighbouring country. India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and some of African countries had larger scale infection but the death ratios remained low in comparison to the Europe – American countries. One reason of this is that of their vaccination programmes. Along with this the lifestyle and some other social aspects of the larger communities had helped. Naturally built immunity system has also helped. Sanity habited people had less immunity and that became a cause for Covid spread. The death ratios too had been higher. Even high-quality medical system failed. Of course, these are initial findings. Still scientific arguments will come, and at the end of some research’s things would be clarified. But the mankind has learnt one thing that if he disturbed the natural cycle, he be prepared for its consequences.
Another achievement of this Corona pandemic: the man was put into his natural condition – in his nudity. This tough time’s testing us. Anything may happen to any man, at any time. Our helplessness is seen in our efforts. Even after many months we haven’t found any remedy. Treatments are like shooting arrows into dark. Isn’t it a big lesson that the mankind is as much helpless as he was in a primitive situation?
This lesson needs deeper understanding. A common theory says that the Covid virus came from the bets. The Chinese are infamous for eating anything. It’s said that they ate everything including the human embryo. Hardly any living thing is out of their menu. If it’s only a matter of food, forget it. The world’s full of non-vegetarians. If they aren’t others won’t have enough food that’s grown. If the mankind has no sense that sea-food and reared meat is enough, then how can the natural cycle be balanced? The world’s not only for the humans. There are millions of micro lives that live at the bottoms of the sea and in the atmosphere. They live and their cycles too go on. But the mankind has changed everything that fits him. For his selfish living, he has since last two centuries disturbed nature beyond limit. Nature has been milked more than necessity and hence imbalance came. Nature feeds each life, as much one requires. Since ages it’s proven but the man didn’t understand it. This very thing has turned into a ghastly state and now looming large over the world. The scientists and sensible men are worried much because of this change. They know age old ice and snow is melting which has disturbed the water level. With that micro life buried at the base since millions of years, have again come to life and started revisiting the world. The bacteria and viruses in the human body are speedily getting infected. The medical field that has always helped to stay healthy against Plague, Rabies, Smallpox, Anthrax, Sars and Covid is facing unexpected difficulties. Except these, novel bacteria and viruses are also growing troublesome.
If the human kind has to remain busy in finding out solutions, then the life will be spent in fear. If diseases grow with our development in various fields, then what’s the meaning of the development? The greatest drawback of the human kind is that the process that we call natural isn’t taking place naturally. Before the birth of a child, the visit to doctors and taking the medicines have become natural. Since the birth of a child different medicines and vaccinations, and supplementary things have been given and even after all this, hardly he lives a disease-free life. In such a condition a question to validity of all such things takes place. We don’t doubt that there are thousands and millions of cases where the medical field has turned a great boon. Especially the accident cases and some lifetime diseases have been under treatment only because of great achievement in this medical field. But we shouldn’t forget that in the very field along with the researches done, other diseases, health issues too have grown in manifold. Population grew and so did the hospitals. Physical and mental diseases have also jumped up. The whole system of governance and administration doesn’t comprehend how to control the imbalance. A deep and dark circle is weaving up around the man and he has no idea how to free himself from it. In getting physical fitness he loses financial fitness. Life seems to be no life at all. Should it be taken as an achievement or a pity that on the life – support system a man in comma lives long? This is confusing indeed.
Later on, the government policies will be reviewed. In India, the PM Narendra Modi declared 22nd March as the voluntary lockdown day. For the first time the people got attached with the pandemic. Then from 24th March, the declaration came for the country lockdown- in independent India for the first time. The trains, planes and all transportation all at a time stopped. Most of the services stopped. Markets, workings places, and common transportation too completely stopped. The lockdown period extended frequently. Man was shut into his house. The scenes after this were unbelievable. The ways news reached, the way the PM addressed, the way people showed faith in him, and all this will be remembered for a long time. Initially the Corona Warriors were encouraged by dish thronging and bell ringing in the evening. Later on, lamps were lit and strength of our unity was exhibited. Most of the people supported such programmes and many opposed too. The initial phase saw success of all the Indian people showing great unity and solidarity. For the police, doctors and medical staff these were the days of facing challenges. The Tabligi Jamat and their people shocked the country with their horrible behaviour. Then came out, the cases of breaking the rules of lockdown, illegal goods transportation and many other strange things. Photographs and videos of the police repression, sad and tragic experiences made a horrible effect on the human mind. At this time the Corona infection rate was low but the way he infected people were shifted to the hospitals, the way their family members quarantined – the whole process gave a nerve to even healthy people. They were terror stuck. People felt helplessness when they found the world reeling under the pandemic. Fear of Corona settled at their deep within. Many remained trapped away from their homes and native places during these three lockdown periods. These people had been out because of business, social duties, sight – seeing and many other reasons. This condition of remaining away from kith and kin created many big problems. The government made arrangements for giving permission. With certain rules travelling facilities too were availed but this was not as easy as it seemed. People felt as if they got visa to go Ahmedabad from Surat. But illiterate ones, workers and common people suffered the most.
The most difficult thing was to travel by special train or bus from one city or state to another one. Making arrangements for labourers returning to their natives was a mammoth task. On one side was the fear of Corona infection, on the other to prepare quarantine centres and providing people food and shelter was not a play. People who became unemployed, the poor, and the migrating people needed a care from the government. Great arrangements by the administrations was no doubt done but it had human limitations, carelessness and immaturity, rashness and vulgarity too showed faces.
The states where people came from other places the most like Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala and Gujarat saw situations worsened. Population density of metros helped Corona infection. The infection pattern too was changing and the administration also began to learn from errors and mistakes and prepared itself accordingly. Matchless to any country in the world, our country arranged the Covid treatment centres. The train halted because of lockdown were turned into hospitals. The community halls, hostels and closed hotel rooms, school and college buildings became the doctor houses. Because of infection the medical staff needed to be kept away from their homes. This situation brought out brighter side of men.
India’s social structure is different. It has its unique aspect and flexibility. If we examine the circle that starts from a family and expanded up to the world outside, we find it has a fine weaving which in common days may not be seen but when it comes to natural calamities and natural problems it’s found in the larger scale. This has been often experienced. This is the virtue that makes man. The period caused an inevitable thing – that of social distancing. This is indeed a very difficult thing in Indian social structure. Dense population made it difficult to observe rules. We have variety of social and religious gatherings with specific observances. Add to them the train of festivals. Looking to this, many experts often predicted deadly consequences but it was a great surprise that people happily accepted the new rules. The lower-class people living in a small room where it was impossible to maintain social distancing and follow other rules put into practice novel ideas to be in tunes.
It is again seen that Indian people unite when there’s a difficulty. Starting from the richest businessman of the country, the artists and actors; and religious places, organisations, merchants and even common people have not only contributed financially but also offered various services. A flow of financial contributions to the PM’s Care Fund was unbelievable. Many facilities like equipment in hospitals, PPE kits and others were not available in our country. They had been imported – especially the ventilators. In routine too we had few but within a month and a half their production started. We exported them to other countries and have helped too. As India was the biggest hydro chloroquine manufacturing country. America and many other underdeveloped countries made a great demand. India, to save our own country people required its stock but in terms of humanity need to help other people as well. Our country did send the help. Most of the countries showed their gratitude to it. The world realised that the slogan ‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbkam’ – the whole world’s my family is not for speeches but the country practiced it.
An event not directly related to Corona, but as it happened during the lockdown times, it need be mentioned – and it is the laying down foundation for the Lord Rama Temple at Ayodhya. On 5th of August in the presence of limited personalities the ritual took place. They have planned to build it within two or three years. It was a huge conflicting issue since last four centuries. After the Independence the issue was politicised. Many mass movements, conflicts and sacrifice of thousands of lives brought ultimately a happy resolution by the Supreme Court’s verdict. A burning issue of Indian political and social life resolved smoothly. This is in a larger perspective a cultured matter. The day 5th August also marked the first anniversary of declaring Jammu and Kashmir as separate union territories. The lockdown phases also witnessed some governments’ toppling down, the Rajya Sabha elections, some political dramas, and confusions. These too will be remembered in time to come. It is to be noted that these years of the Hindu – Muslim unity and disunity will definitely shape future. Anyone would find this it as the changing scenario of India.
Traditional relationship with China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Malaysia has been changed. The world diplomacy and in its references Indian foreign policy has found drastic changes. When many political ups and downs are noted because of strong leadership in the USA, India, China, the USSR, Iran, Turkmenistan, Israel, North Korea, Germany, and France power has been imbalanced leading to unpredictable behaviour. The fear of the third world war could be smelled in such a Corona hard time. The USA and the allied countries one side stood against China and their befriended countries. The new definition of nationalism not only in India has surged but also in many other countries. Mighty leaders are blowing bugles like the Gorilla warriors. Man, perhaps doesn’t care for destruction. Fearless to tread towards the primitive stage of the mankind.
Time constantly tests us. It presses gradually. In comparison to other creatures we are much conscious to utilise time – in all senses. From its birth, the humankind practiced what Darwin said: Survival for the fittest. We think we are on the top of the revolution. Facts indicate our supremacy over the world and trying to encompass other planets. Thousands of years we have struggled. Ours is fruitful struggle. Struggle to know the other worlds. There’s perhaps none who doesn’t know micro life. To know such things man has spent ages. He tried to bring micro life to mammoth life under his feet. Got great success as well. Faced failure too. Today for him the challenge to control Covid isn’t small. One day he would find out solution but before it happens, he might have paid much.
Earlier pandemic diseases swollen up many lives – lives in millions. Plague, T.B., Rabies, Smallpox immediately strike the mind. They had shaken the world and wiped our nearly 30% population. Corona added a new dimension – that’s financial wreck up. Because of it the future will face much trouble. Except the man other lives throbs normally and enjoys the period but the most industrious man is shut in the house. Of course, the mankind will rise again, and be normal.
The idea of this Corona special issue lurked my mind during the last April days. There was no other way but to sway on the swing and pass time using the smart phone. The mind hadn’t been at rest because of this lockdown. But social media posts, especially blogs and Facebook content, expression of new and young writers constantly provided me for new thinking. New situation was described many, many went into past and drew it back and that way tried to bear the present. Some reputed Gujarati writers and poets when I saw got involved, I felt all this must be preserved. For future researchers, curious minds it is our duty to save all this content. This idea developed then. Through video conferencing I made meetings with the members of the Editorial Board. Popular at that time but now banned the platform of Tiktok, expressed lots of novel ideas, scenes, and videos. They were marvellous. The lovers were caged at different places – one here and another somewhere. Sudden severed relation gave traumatic feelings not only to them but also to husbands and wives. Another thing caused dramatic conditions as the husband and the wife had to stay 24 hours together. It was a compulsion and hence domestic violence surfaced. Men habits got changed, children couldn’t play in streets. Out of blue plenty of time they got. Free time brought free creative expression. I believe things expressed in various media need preserved. May no aesthetic value the content has, true that in future may that look irrelevant but the time in which we lived would be seen later on. The future generation will know how we mocked the deadly time in lighter stories and jokes, how we bowed down to Corona and cried and how our weakness came out. When some researchers will have interest in such things and pass through this special issue, the sentiments of this generation will touch him. This is exciting for us.
To turn into reality – the thought of special issue many have extended their hands. They are writers, poets, artists, bloggers and Facebook writers. They took troubles and sent us their content. We couldn’t find out original sources of many things, and that can’t be possible too, we have tried to serve you things. Consider this as folk literature. People continue to add to the received content and forward to others. No doubt we tried for sources but at many places you won’t have them. Let me thank all of you – who sent us their content. We have taken some content from other magazines and newspapers. Thanks to them as well. Friends and students who helped collect for this issue – I thank you.
Special thanks to Co-editors Mr. Hasmukh Patel, Mr. Niyaz Pathan and Mr. Bhavesh Jethwa. On our appeal Mr. Dipak B. Bhatt and Mr. Ajit Makwana have worked much to prepare this issue. When the content overflowed it is indeed difficult to choose, avoid duplication, care for quality and raw language. These friends made things possible. Mr. Samvedan Pandya has also helped. Thanks to all other known and unknown people as their kind services reaped this fruit. Thanks, from the bottom of my heart.
Thanks to direct and indirect helpers, responding people, readers and future readers. Have some words for our efforts. Your views and reviews will be our future stock. Do: like, comment, and suggest. Once again, I thank all of you.
